Botleys, the seat of the Lady Mawbey, late Sir Jos Mawbey

Watercolour of Botleys displaying a four square Palladian house of seven bays on a hill. The site was sold to Sir Joseph Mawbey (1730-1798), politician, by Mrs Pleasance Hall in 1763. The old mansion was pulled down and the new house was built in 1765 by Kenton Couse for Mawbey.

Lady Mawbey was presumably the wife of Sir Joseph Mawbey (died 1817) who had inherited the estate after his father's death. The granddaughters of Sir Joseph Mawbey the elder inherited the estate in 1817. One married John Ivett Briscoe of Foxhills and they sold Botleys in 1822 to David Hall, feltmaker

This database record is for an image from the collection of over 2000 items made by Robert Barclay (1750-1830) of Bury Hill, Dorking. The collection includes over 500 early 19th century watercolour views by father and son John and Edward Hassell, and 17th to 19th century prints of people and views.
