Foundation School at Chertsey called the Free School

Watercolour of Sir William Perkins' school, Chertsey, displaying 5 bays, pink walls with stone dressings picked out in white. In 1819 a scheme was approved in Chancery for rebuilding the school to make education available for 250 boys and 150 girls

Perkins, Sir William
Sir William Perkins founded the school by deed in 1725 for 25 poor boys, extended to 25 poor girls in 1736, to receive education and clothing. Plaque over the door says 'for 50 children clothed and taught: go and do likewise'.

This database record is for an image from the collection of over 2000 items made by Robert Barclay (1750-1830) of Bury Hill, Dorking. The collection includes over 500 early 19th century watercolour views by father and son John and Edward Hassell, and 17th to 19th century prints of people and views.
