Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by Mr DF Brown, former director of Vulcanised Fibre (TR) Ltd, of Hailsham, East Sussex, between May 1973 and December 1983. Mr Brown is the son-in-law of Mr A Filmer Jacobs, the founder of Vulcanised Fibre Ltd.
-Introduction The derelict site of Broadford Mills (which had been destroyed by fire in 1915), was bought in 1927 by Jacobs, who previously worked as works manager for the Diamond Fibre Company, Maidstone, Kent (see -/box 16, photographs).
Vulcanised Fibre Ltd was incorporated on 30 May 1927, Mr and Mrs Filmer Jacobs were the first and only shareholders. The fibre produced by the company was formed when superimposed layers of specially prepared paper were chemically treated so that the laminae were virtually destroyed, producing a homogeneous mass of cellulose which was produced in sheets and tubes. The company promoted Vulcanised Fibre as 'lighter than aluminium, as hard as horn and as tough as leather'. The fibre also possessed considerable di-electric properties.
In late 1930 the company acquired the lease of Stonebridge meadow and wharf, Shalford, to expand production. By 1931 output of fibre was eight tons a week, and the number of employees had grown from three to fifty. By 1936 production had risen to 15 tons a week and 150 men were employed producing 'Castle' fibre. The fibre was used by the electrical and mechanical trades, including for the manufacture of railway signalling equipment. Various departments developed including a Container department, and the Machine Shop and Tube Mill.
During the Second World War many of the vacancies in the factory created when staff left to join the forces were filled by women. The company formed its own platoon in the Surrey Home Guard, in addition to the Mill Fire Brigade and Air Raid Precaution Wardens (see -/box 1 & plan 4-5). In 1940 vulcanised fibre was used for the manufacture of jettisonable petrol tanks for aircraft, including the 'Spitfire' (see -/box 1 & roll 1). The company was also involved in for the manufacture of tanks as part of 'The Group of Vulcanised Fibre Tank Manufacturers', incorporating mills and factories at Shalford, Cranleigh and Guildford under the direction of Vulcanised Fibre Ltd.
After the war Vulcanised Fibre acquired Holbrook House, Shalford, and its adjoining land. This became the company's registered office. The company also bought the lease of Place Farm, Hascombe, and later bought New Pond Farm, Compton, to provide employment for redundant or retired staff. Polsted Manor, Compton, was acquired in 1950 to be converted into staff accommodation (see -/box 16 photographs).
Vulcanised Fibre purchased a paper making mill at Eynsford, Kent, in December 1952, which was converted to a fibre mill (see -/box 6, plan 6-7 et al). By the mid 1950s a new plant had to be developed at Eynsford to meet orders for sheet fibre which increased to 39 tons a week.
In 1963 Vulcanised Fibre became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tullis Russell, the company that had supplied all the paper required by Vulcanised Fibre since its establishment. Vulcanised Fibre Ltd merged with Spaulding Fibre Ltd (a subsidiary of Spaulding Fibre Co. Inc., USA) in 1967, and Spaulding Russell Limited was formed.
In the late 1970s the company was hit by recession which resulted in the closure of the Eynsford Mill in January 1981. Tullis Russell bought the 50 per cent share holding held by Spaulding Fibre Co. Inc. USA in July 1980. The company was renamed Vulcanised Fibre (TR) Ltd.
In September 1982 the decision to close the Shalford factory was taken. The main reasons for the closure were outlined by Mr S Oppenheimer, Managing Director: the two year recession, the world-wide reduction in the use of fibre due to competitive materials, and a discontinuation in the orders for fibre tubing by the MOD amongst others. Vulcanised Fibre (TR) Ltd ceased production in January 1983.
