  • Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand)
    Provenance
Deposited by Corbould, Rigby and Co of London per the British Records Association, in September 1965.
    Introduction
This accumulation divides conveniently into two parts: first, deeds and other documents (with the exception of court rolls) relating to the manor of Ashtead retained by the Howard family after the manor had passed out of their hands in 1877 on the death of Mary, widow of Col F G Howard (1733-1846); and second, correspondence (estate, private and family) of F G Howard relating not only to Ashtead but to his estates in Westmorland, Norfolk and Staffordshire. The estate of Levens, Westmorland, was brought to the Earls of Suffolk by Catherine, daughter of Col James Graham, who married the 11th Earl. The estate of Elford, Staffs, belonged to the Bagots, and that of Castle Rising, Norfolk, was formerly held by the Dukes of Norfolk.
