Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by Mr HE Robinson, former headmaster of St Mary's School, Byfleet, in October 1999. Having worked in aircraft production and the munitions industry during the second world war, both in Birmingham and London, Mr Robinson began teacher training in 1947 at the University of London. Once qualified, he taught at the junior school in Cobham for 10 years from 1948. In 1958, he took the position of deputy head at St Mary's School, Byfleet, taking over as head following the death of the existing headmaster in the early 1960s. Mr Robinson retired from teaching in 1973.

During the Second World War, the school received evacuee children and staff from schools in London and northern Surrey. The evacuees were merged with the Byfleet pupils and staff and lessons were held both at the school and in the village hall. The first evacuees arrived on 1 Sep 1939 and by 6 Nov, the school had received 99 evacuees from Sacred Heart RC School, Merton Abbey School and Bushey School, all in Merton; and the London County Council schools at Brandelhow Road, Putney, and Peterborough Road, Fulham. The log book records that many evacuees returned home in the months after Christmas. On 1 Jul 1940, the school received 50 more children and teachers from Waller Road Junior Middle School, Deptford, who had originally been evacuated to Brighton.
