Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance First accession including the minute books was transferred from stock of Surrey Local Studies Library and accessioned in November 1999.
The minutes for 1986-1995 and 2002-2007 were deposited by Miss Hazel Paget, Minutes Secretary, in June 2001 and April 2008.
Further deposits were made by the Guildford Society in November 2001, April 2005 (when the Society left its premises at Guildford Institute), February 2006, April 2007 and November 2008.
-Introduction The Old Guildford Society was founded in November 1896 as the local representative of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (see -/1/1). Initially, the aim of the society was declared as the "preservation of the beauty and interest of Guildford and its neighbourhood" but was later widened to include "the protection of natural and architectural features" and the "promotion of interest in the past, present and future development of Guildford". Dr George C Williamson, of The Mount, Guildford, initiated the first meeting of the society on 3 November 1896 at Guildford Town Hall and was duly elected secretary. The society organised annual meetings and lectures and the large amount of newspaper cuttings in this collection is indicative of the good local press which the society received (-/1/1 and -/2/1).
By 1936, the society was reorganised and was simply known as The Guildford Society (see -/1/1). Monthly meetings were held and by 1986, the society had a membership of 789.
As the records in this deposit demonstrate, the Guildford Society devoted much activity to providing input to planning schemes under the Town and Country Planning Acts from 1947 onwards (Surrey Development Plan and its successor the Surrey Structure Plan) and responding to individual applications for development. After local government reorganisation in 1974, the remit of the Society included the rural areas of the new Guildford Borough (eg Wisley airfield), although the majority of the records relate to town area.
-The records This archive includes a complete set of minutes from 1896 to 1995 (including early executive committee minutes, 1896-1904, -/1/2).
The bulk of this archive comprises files relating to the Society's watch on local planning. Series -/4/- and -/5/- comprise files on particular developments and policy, and -/6/- comprises similar files relating to the transport group of the Society; -/7/- is an original file sequence of general correspondence relating to planning, which is supplemented by earlier correspondence in series -/8/-.
Copy material of other local organisations such as St Catherine's Village Association, Surrey Amenity Council later The Surrey Society, and Holy Trinity Amenity Group are included in these records.
-Arrangement The records received in 2005 and 2006 have in the main been box-listed only: their contents have not been studied in detail.
