PYRFORD VILLAGE WAR MEMORIAL HALL: MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MINUTES AND COMPILED HISTORY, 1918-1984

Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by Mr A J Paice, chairman of the management committee of Pyrford War Memorial Hall in April 2002.
-Introduction In December 1918, the residents of Pyrford suggested a lasting memorial to those who had fallen during the First World War. After suggestions of a cross and a hospital, the building of a village hall was successfully proposed.
The first meeting of the building sub-committee was held on 28 Feb 1919 (see -/1/1) and in July 1921, land in Pyrford owned by the Lovelace family was given for the building of a hall. After much deliberation, the architect appointed was John Hale of Hoe Bridge Lodge and the successful tender for the construction came from David Rowell of Howick Place, London. The hall was constructed in just over two months and cost around £1700; it was officially opened on 24 Oct 1921 by Viscountess Elveden.
-The records -/2/1-5 were collated by Mr Paice to form a chronological history of the hall. Original documents, including correspondence, accounts and newscuttings relating to the hall have been placed in chronological order, with summaries and lists. Mr Paice retains current minutes and other records for the hall and will collate them in the same way.
