MAYBURY COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL AND PREDECESSORS: RECORDS, 1880-1975
Reference Number: 8101
Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by Mr Richard Christophers on behalf of Woking Lightbox in February 2007.
-Introduction Maybury Board School was built in Board School Road, Maybury, in 1874 and opened in 1875. Although originally built to house both juniors and infants, the infants' school had a separate organizational identity. A separate building for infants was provided in Walton Road, Maybury, in 1906. This arrangement continued until September 1933 when, due to falling numbers, the infants' school closed and re-merged with the school in Board School Road to form Maybury Junior Mixed and Infants' School.
The Board school was divided into boys' and girls' departments under separate headteachers in Jan 1904. Following closure of the girls' department in 1927, upper level girls were transferred to Goldsworth and Monument Hill Schools; the remainder reassembled with the boys' department in April 1927.
Some time after 1945 it was decided that the children from the Southern Railway Servants Orphanage at Monument Hill County Primary School should be transferred to Maybury School and once again, the building in Walton Road was used to accommodate the infants' school. The school became Maybury County Primary School in 1946.
