BLACKHEATH, ST MARTIN, AND CHILWORTH, ST THOMAS: PARISH RECORDS, 1894-1970

-Introduction The church of St Martin, Blackheath, was built between 1892 and 1893 and dedicated on 26 July 1893 as a chapel of ease in the parish of Wonersh. The architect was C Harrison Townsend, who wrote an article on the church in the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects, February 1894. It contains frescoes painted by Mrs Lea Merrit, by a method described in the Journal of the Society of Arts, 6 December 1895, by Mrs Merritt and Professor Roberts Austen, C B.
The site of the church was conveyed to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1903 by Lady Florence Maud Roberts Austen. The church was licensed for baptisms from 1928, and for the solemnisation of marriages from 1934.
St Thomas, Chilworth (also described as being in Shalford Hamlet) was dedicated in 1892 as a mission chapel for Shalford parish. The present building dates from 1896 and was built by W H Seth-Smith as the Greshambury Institute (see Nairn and Pevsner, The Buildings of England, Surrey, 1971). The church was licensed for baptisms from 1928 and for marriages from 1964.
The ecclesiastical parish of Blackheath and Chilworth was created in 1938 out of the ancient parishes of Wonersh, Shalford and St Martha.
