Reference Number: G103

  • Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand)
    Provenance
Presented by Miss Rachel L Manners in 1954, on behalf of herself and her brother (children of Charles Manners) in fulfilment of a wish of her aunt Rachel Manners who was the younger sister of Mary and Charles Manners.
    -
    Introduction
In 1885 Miss Mary Emmeline Manners, author of several books for children, published in the Christmas number of Sylvia's Home Journal a poem entitled 'Wonderland', the author being named as 'One who loves Alice' (-/1/1-2); it is reprinted in SD Collingwood, Life (op. cit. below), pp 248-250. A copy of the poem was sent by the editor to Charles Lutwidge Dodgson [Lewis Carroll], and his letter of thanks to the author for her 'very sweet verses' was the beginning of a friendship with Mary Manners and her younger sister Rachel. It also led to a business connection with her brother Charles.
Charles Dodgson was evidently touched by Miss Manners' verses, which expressed exactly what he hoped children would like about the Alice books. He must have felt an immediate sympathy with her, for in his very first letter he provides the 'One who loves Alice' with an uninhibited explanation of what children mean to him: 'Next to what conversing with an angel might be - for it is hard to imagine it, comes, I think, the privilege of having a real child's thoughts uttered to one. I have known some few real children (you have too, I am sure), and their friendship is a blessing and a help in life' (-/1/36).
No letters from Charles Dodgson to Miss Manners survive between 1886 and 1888, though there are references to correspondence during this period in a later letter (-/1/8a). The Manners family were Quakers, and the family home was in Mansfield, where Charles Manners (Mary's brother) ran the firm of Barringer, Wallis and Manners which made metal boxes, and of which he was the founder. Miss Manners, however, spent part of the year in Croydon, and it was there that Dodgson, who had suggested that they should meet (-/1/8), visited her in July and August 1889. On the second occasion he was accompanied by Isa and Nellie Bowman. Miss Manners wrote a vivid account of these visits (-/1/9).
Early in 1891 Miss Manners must have written to Dodgson on her brother's behalf asking about the possibility of using illustrations from Through the Looking Glass as decorations on an enamelled 'children's tin', or 'nursery tin' (-/2/4) Dodgson gave his permission (-/1/17-18), and a correspondence with Charles Manners ensued (-/2/1-40). He was delighted with the boxes, and seeing at once what excellent presents they would make for his child friends, offered to pay for those to be sent to them (-/2/5a). Several hundreds of boxes were sent by Mr Manners to addresses provided by Dodgson (-/2/8b,c,d; 10b, 17b, 18, 19, 20b, 21, 24a, 25, 26, 27b, 30, 33b, 37b, 39a, 40), and he apparently always refused Dodgson's further offers to pay. Dodgson preferred them without biscuits - though later a tin with biscuits was better than no tin at all (-/1/33). A crisis, necessitating a telegram followed by a severe letter, occurred when the Rev CL Dodgson's name appeared in one of the boxes, together with an advertisement for 'somebody's biscuits' (-/2/12).

    The records
When SD Collingwood, preparing his Life and Letters, read Miss Manners' essay and copies of Dodgson's letters to her (-/1/9 & 35) he told her they 'are the most valuable contribution I have yet received for my work'. The sympathy and rapport between Dodgson and Mary Manners produced many revealing letters, since Dodgson did not hesitate to express his opinions with some candour when writing to her. In one letter he explains how he had always kept his two personalities distinct (-/1/32). Complementing this first group of letters, quite another side of his personality appears in the letters to Charles Manners. The collection also includes presentation copies of Dodgson's works that appeared after 1885, and some letters showing how he involved his friends, as well as himself, in charitable activities (-/1/6-7).

TitleManuscript by Mary E Manners, 'An Unexpected Guest, July 17th 1889': an account of a visit paid to her at Croydon by Charles Dodgson on 17 Jul 1889 whilst she was 'looking after the dinner'. Dodgson showed her portraits of his child friends, Isa and Nellie Bowman; 'Isa used to be 'Alice' until she grew too big'. He was on his way to London, to fetch Isa to stay with him at Eastbourne; 'when people ask me why I have never married, I tell them I have never met the young lady whom I could endure for a fortnight, but Isa and I got on so well together'. Although he did not eat, he sat down and carved a diminutive joint with difficulty; 'I think it is just as well I don't want anything, for I don't know where I should find it'. Dodgson visited again in Aug on his way to town with both Isa and Nellie, who called him, 'Uncle'. He did not allow them liberties, such as Isa's 'Oh Goosie'. He told an anecdote about a dog sent into the sea after sticks which returned holding its own tail, 'like the whiting'; 'when I wrote that I believed that whiting really did have their tails in their mouths'. He visited only twice but corresponded at intervals until his death, in violet ink on small slips of paper, about 'curates and actresses, books and babies, puzzles, poems, pictures and postage stamps'. He stated his 'eight or nine wise words about letter-writing' in a booklet. Mary Manners refers to his literary skill by reference to a copy of Sylvie and Bruno, which she received from the author, the introductory verses of which have lines beginning with the letters of the name, Isa Bowman: also to a copy of The Hunting of the Snark dedicated 'to a dear child', Gertrude Chataway, in the same way. TitleLetter from CL Dodgson, Eastbourne, to Charles Manners, expressing his concern, but 'I feel annoyed at the unwarrantable liberties which your people have taken with the boxes 'sent as presents to his friends'. 'First, they have pasted into the lid an advertisement of somebody's biscuits'. He would not have accepted the biscuits had he foreseen 'the intention was to vulgarise the boxes by turning them into advertising mediums': he refers to the telegram requiring all boxes sent out for him to go empty. 'Secondly, what is an even greater annoyance to me, and a more unwarrantable liberty, they have printed the enclosed card, to be enclosed in the boxes: thus making me responsible, not only for the vulgarity of a piece of bad English, but also being the sender of 'kind regards' to my friends'. He asks to have the names of any of his friends who were sent boxes containing either advertisement or card A postscript thanks Mr Manners for a box and the biscuits - 'The latter I am retaining, but the box I am returning .... as the advertisement, pasted in the lid, renders it useless to me'. Finally, he is annoyed that his real name has been revealed to the firm 'and therefore to their workmen - I had fancied you knew how strongly I object to its being communicated to strangers'
