Miss Wright's father was organist at Christ Church. Woking, and composed the hymn, 'Spirit Divine Attend Our Prayers'. As cited in -/-/3 below, Miss Wright and her parents are referred to in CLD's diary entry of 23 Apr 1892: 'In the train I made friends with a Mr and Mrs Wright of Woking (he has been organist there) & the eldest of their 3 children "Leslie Isabel" about 9, a sweet looking child – I afterwards sent her a book, and got a strange letter from her father, who teaches his children that no true Xtian can attend theatres'. Miss Wright described her encounter with 'the delightful stranger' as 'as vivid as though it happened yesterday. It was a grief to me as a child, and is still, that I never saw him again' (quoted in Lewis Carroll in Guildford, op. cit.). -/-/1-2 are quoted in M Cohen, op. cit. Concerning an earlier letter of Mrs Feilden's suggesting that CLD write for children on religious topics, which CLD wishes to quote in the preface to the facsimile of his original 'Alice' ms. The second letter, of Aug 1885, is a note written on the foot of a printed circular letter from 7 Lushington Road, Eastbourne, enclosing a prospectus for sale or lease [?of Lushington Road house]. CLD thanks Mrs Feilden for her permission to print, and says although he might attempt a religious book for children, 'I feel about it much as David did about building the Temple'. He ends 'I have not read Mrs Keith's Crime, & from your description of it, would rather not – however clever it may be'. [This letter is not included in M Cohen, op. cit.] The original letters were enclosed in a boxed copy of Alice's Adventures Under Ground (1886) which was sometime the property of Sir Charles Howell Thomas, and inscribed to 'Mrs Batson from VCL (Alice's sister')'.
