Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Two minute books of the select vestry, 1820-1825, were deposited by the Vicar and Churchwardens on 8 October 1975 (P65/1/1,2). The parish workhouse accounts, 1827-1829, (P65/2/1,2) were transferred to Surrey Record Office by the County Welfare Officer on 19 July 1963.
-Introduction After the Poor Law Amendment Act, 1834, the parish workhouse was closed and the Dorking Poor Law Union Workhouse established.

Title Dorking parish workhouse: monthly statements of receipts and expenditure. 1 vol Each double page contains, in printed format, on one page: debit: value of provisions, clothing, fuel, etc. purchased, together with value of stock credit: value of stock, earnings of paupers, claims for support and charges on house created by maintenance of ......... paupers at ..... per head. The opposite page has sections for account of provisions, clothing and fuel used during four week period, and list of debts contracted and not discharged (blank throughout). Totals given of stock value, purchases, gratuities and salary (of master) and earnings of paupers. Numbers of paupers listed weekly to Oct 1828. Volume only part used; end papers made from posters, one advertising beer (possibly herbal) offered by Edward Langley, chemist and druggist, Dorking, the other advertising mustard in packets and bottles.
