ABINGER, ST JAMES: PARISH RECORDS, 1559-1979

Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by the Rector and Parochial Church Council in October 1980 and September 1982.
-Introduction Until the nineteenth century few alterations were made to a small Norman church, built to serve the hamlets of Abinger and Paddington. Extensively restored and enlarged in 1856-1857, 1878-1880 and 1934-1938, it was largely destroyed by a flying bomb in August 1944. The subsequent rebuilding was completed in 1951.
Oakwood (or Okewood) Chapel was established about 1220 in a southern outlier of Wotton parish to serve those who lived there and in the adjoining extremity of Abinger (see-/14/-). It became a separate ecclesiastical unit in 1853 (see OK/- and 1951). Abinger was one of six parishes which contributed part of its area when Holmbury St Mary was established in 1878 (see -/15/-).
A Mission Room provided services in the Hammer from 1887-1977 (see -/16/-).
