ST THOMAS ON THE BOURNE AND ST MARTIN BY THE GREEN: PARISH RECORDS, 1875-1987

Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by the Vicar and Parochial Church Council in November 1987, December 1989 and September 1992. -/11/7 was deposited on behalf of the church by Nona Parfitt of Farnham in August 2010.
-Introduction St Thomas on The Bourne is a daughter church of St Andrew's, Farnham, and was built in 1861 and dedicated by the Bishop of Winchester on 14 February 1862. The ecclesiastical parish of The Bourne was formed in April 1875. The first vicar, the Revd TW Sidebotham, was instituted on 23 May 1875 by the Bishop of Guildford. A Vicarage was built for the incumbent by public subscription. The church was enlarged in 1881 with the addition of a new south aisle and organ chamber.
In Jan 1907 a public meeting was held proposing a scheme to build a new church by public subscription as an alternative to enlarging the current building. A 1.5a site was purchased for the new church in Jan 1909 and the foundation stone was laid by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Lord Ashcombe, on 25 January 1911. The first portion of the church was consecrated by John Randolph, Bishop of Guildford, in September of the same year. The second portion of the church, including the completed side chapel, was dedicated in May 1926 (-/5/13). The architect of the new church, Henry S Sidebotham, son of the first Vicar, wrote a history of the parish in 1907 (-/2/11). This account was expanded and produced in typescript by the author in 1950 (-12/2). The parish hall was also built by public subscription in 1912 (-/5/48-49).
Tilford Mission Church, Tilford was built in 1904. In 1938 following the alteration of the parish boundaries the church was served by The Bourne, and became known as Lower Bourne Mission Church, (-/2/5). The church was dedicated as St Martin by the Green in June 1957.
The site for Brambleton Hall (at the junction of Talbot Road and Upper Way, Farnham) was purchased in 1957. The hall was built by volunteers from the community in a scheme that was known as 'Operation Mustard Seed'. Brambleton Hall was opened in December 1958 (-/5/51-54).

series: BRN/10/ - SCHOOL Scope: The original parish school was opened on 21 Dec 1869 and became known as the 'Old Schools'. The first meeting of parishioners to consider the advisability of enlarging the school was held on 14 Feb 1912. Plans had already been prepared and were presented to the meeting. These showed five rooms, of which the larger three could be converted into a hall to accommodate 300 people. The estimated cost of the schools enlargement was £1,150. A Building Committee, Appeal Committee and Garden Fete and Entertainment Committee were appointed at the meeting on 22 Feb 1912.
