He was instituted to the Vicarage of Effingham in 1696 shortly after his return. He was buried there on 19 Nov 1724. For further details see 'A Memorandum Book Preserved at Little Bookham Church, Surrey' transcribed by John Harvey. Date: 1664-1920s Small volume with parchment cover entitled 'A Catalogue of Mr Miller'... Title Small volume with parchment cover entitled 'A Catalogue of Mr Miller's Books 1750'. Flyleaf has 'A Catalogue of the Books in the Vicarial Library at Effingham in Surrey, left by John Miller Vicar in the year 1724'. This volume contains notes and writings of John Miller, Vicar of Effingham, 1696-1724 and includes inter alia: alist of books 'left at my brother's; historical notes; philosophical notes (Latin and Greek); list of beasts with description of each (armadillo, hippopotamus, lynx, salamander, shrew et al), with properties popularly thought to be associated with each animal; sermons; arithmetical rules of number; a large number of notes and observations concerning North America and North American Indians, including the Great Lakes, Niagara, land tillage and improvement, fish and fishing, bread and other food, wine and other liquors, water and land carriage, timber, the Canadian fur trade and Indian medicines, including a cure for a rattlesnake bite.
