EGHAM, ST JOHN THE BAPTIST: PARISH RECORDS, 1560-1908

Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by the Vicar and Parochial Church Council in October, 1980.
-Introduction Egham belonged to the Abbey of Chertsey from its foundation in the seventh century, a vicarage being formally established in 1333. The advowson was in the Abbot's hands until the Dissolution. A church, possibly built in the twelfth century, existed in 1291 (recorded in the taxation of Pope Nicholas) and was rebuilt, in whole or part, in 1327 (according to an inscription in church). Between 1817 and 1820 this church, too small to accommodate the congregation and stated to be in bad repair, was entirely pulled down and rebuilt. The three daughter churches of Christ Church, Virginia Water (consecrated 1838), St Jude, Englefield Green (built in 1859) and Egham, Hythe (church built in 1930), now have their own parishes carved out of the ancient parish of Egham.
