FRENSHAM, ST MARY THE VIRGIN: PARISH RECORDS, 1649-1978

Descriptive Information about the Record (click to expand) Provenance Deposited by the Vicar and Parochial Church Council in July 1977, November 1978 and October 1983.
-Introduction Frensham was a chapelry of Farnham, the church being moved to the present site in 1239. The benefice belonged to the Archdeacon of Surrey as Impropriate Rector of Farnham, and he habitually appointed a curate (at £20 a year) and leased the tithes. (A summary of one such lease is -/11/2). Frensham appears to have been regarded as a parish by 1553 (Victoria County History ii (1905) p 582). Originally the parish comprised the tithings of Frensham, Churt and Pitfold (see -/8/1). A church was built at Churt in 1860, while part of Pitfold tithing was included in the ecclesiastical district of St Stephen, Shottermill in 1846, the tithes being divided between the three churches in 1868, when the last lease of Frensham tithes fell in, while payments to incumbents and to charities were arranged later. In 1876 the Revd O C S Lang became the first resident incumbent since 1865 (-/10/7).
The daughter church of The Good Shepherd at Dockenfield was licensed in 1910 (-/16/1).
The Church School in Frensham was established in 1845 (-/15/1), and an infants' school at Batt's Corner, Dockenfield opened in 1887 and closed in 1923 (16/2-48).
