HER 10071 - CHURCH OF ST JOHN
The original Parish Church of Redhill. Built by Sir James Knowles in 1843. Gothic. It was enlarged and so much altered in 1889 by J L Pearson that it is now almost entirely the work of that architect and period. The tower and spire were added in 1895. The Church is good of its kind, standing in a commanding position dominating Earlswood Common. Nave, aisles, chancel with shorter aisles, north porch and vestry extensions. Tower, with stone spire and corner turrets, at west end of south aisle. Knapped flint with good quality stone dressings, slated roofs. Inside a rib-vaulted chancel and good wrought iron choir screens. Stone west gallery, rib-vaulted below. Roof of very tall nave rests on stone transverse walls above arches supported on compound piers. Listing NGR: TQ2742149382
