HER 1076 - Firestone and hearthstone quarries, entrance at Quarry Deane
Entrance to upper Greensand quarry at Quarry Deane. This is a pollar and firestone quarry. The quarry workings provided building materials for local use, and refractory slabs for use in furnaces, notably in the glass industry. The firestone site is the sole surviving part of the early 19th century lime burning and stone quarry complex of Joliffe and banks which lay at the southern terminus of the Croydon, Merston and Godstone Iron railway. The water table was lowered by drainage level at the site to give access to further resources of stone. The floor and roof were deliberately robbed for stone when the best firestone was exhausted. Although the site is small, it is a very complex quarry. Different stages of quarry workings can be seen here, as the stone beds became exhausted, and many extreme measures were taken to obtain stone blocks. It is a site of significance due to the surface tramway (CMGIR) connecting with the quarry yard
