HER 1095 - Site of the 16th - 17th century Nonsuch Palace

Scheduled Monument
The site of Nonsuch Palace and its Banqueting House lies on the site of Cuddington deserted medieval village was excavated in 1959-60 (See HER 1884 for the Banqueting House).
The Palace comprised two rectangular courtyards each having a northern gatehouse. Building was commenced by Henry VIII in 1538 after he had demolished the village of Cuddington, its church (of 11th century -1350 AD) and mansion. It was completed by 1580, occupied by Queen Elizabeth I, Anne of Denmark and Henrietta Maria, but fell into disrepair and was sold for demolition which began in 1682. The inner court was an experiment in early Gothic architecture with Renaissance decorations based on Fontainebeau, and it earned a unique reputation throughout Europe - hence the name 'Nonsuch'.
