HER 1113 - "Dead Hills", possible site of gallows
Field and street names around the Epsom - Ewell boundary, for example, Church Field, Gallows Street-Lane, Gallows Green and Dead Hills suggest gallows, and possibly a barrow stood at the site. The meadows between Epsom Road and West Street, near the boundary are known as the Dead hills or Furze Hills and local tradition suggests that there may have been barrows containing burials here. West Street was known as Gallows Street until the 19th century. Before the mid 16th century, it was known as Gallows Lane for part of its length. Gibraltar was formerly known as Gallows Green and the gallows stood to the north. No reference to the site of a barrow was discovered in any local history but vague accounts refer to human bones being discovered in the triangular area formed by Ewell Street, Epsom Road and the Epsom-Ewell boundary (area centred TQ 217 620).
