HER 1117 - Ewell Gun Powder Mills, 16th to 19th century
Ewell Powder Mills. The first authorised gunpowder mills in England, on the Hogsmill in Surrey, were licensed to Evelyns and Hill in 1588-9. There were four wheels, each working two mills at Ewell. Canalisation of the Hogsmill River in this area probably destroyed the last traces of the mills and associated buildings, with the exception of a 2m length of brick wall foundation and a section of brick-lined flue or drain 0.2 - 0.3m in diameter, on the site of the Corning House.
