HER 1123 - Saxon bowl barrow, part of "Gally Hills" group,

Scheduled Monument
Gally Hills barrows. Four bowl barrows 25ft to 45ft in diameter and 2.5 to 5ft in height. The name Gally Hills possibly indicates the former position of a gallows and a gibbet is said to have stood nearby. The northern most barrow of the remaining Galley Hill barrows was excavated during May 1972, after extensive damage. The excavations revealed a primary burial placed in a pit dug 2m into natural chalk, with disturbance caused by a circular pit. The associated finds of a spear, knife and hanging bowl suggest this may have been the burial of a Saxon warrior. Other excavated features included a 'floor' of small flint nodules 10cm deep, levelled below with clay over bedrock and a secondary pit, of unknown purposes. Also found were four secondary burials. Two of the skeletons were intact and displayed neck dislocation, suggesting these were possibly gallows victims.
