HER 11332 - CHURCH OF ST PETER

Church. 12th century tower. 16th century porch with extensive 19th century restoration. Ironstone rubble with stone dressings, dressed stone to north aisle, Horsham slab roof over nave, plain tiled north aisle roof; wooden shingled spire with wooden cross surmounting. Aisled nave-with gabled south porch, tower to south east, chancelwith chapel and vestry to north. 2 gables to buttressed west end. South aisle windows 15th century, north aisle windows 1852. Tower windows with 2 light plate tracery of c.1260. North door planked, under shallow pent roof porch hood, south corner doors 19th century with strapwork hinges. Interior: tiled floor, whitewashed 3 bay nave arcades on round piers to south, lower than north aisle, with slightly chamfered arches. Corbelled chancel arch dying into imposts. Panelled chancel roof, arched bracing to north aisle roof. Two bay north chancel chapel arcade. Fittings: arched piscina to south chancel wall. Square font on angle columns with central moulded shaft on moulded plinth. Monuments: south aisle wall: Bisco wall monuments: late 18th century and early 19th century, black grounds, white inscription panels. Over south door:Wall monument to Teulon family. Early 19th century Black ground white inscription panel, apron broken off. South wall west end: Wall monument to Marmaduke Hilton, died 1768. Grey veined marble ground, central arched white inscription panel with gadrooning across base on scroll brackets. Cartouche in apron, open pediment above on scroll brackets with crowning fluted urn. West wall: 18th century drapery monument stone, winged skull in apron, crest above. South west corner: Chest monument to John 13th Lord Elphinstone, died 1860 by Matthew Noble. Grey stone, panelled plinth with quatrofo'il'decoration, white marble reclining effigy above. PEVSNER: Buildings of England, Surrey (1971) pp. 343-4 Listing NGR: TQ4050253238
