DescriptionThe Crown, standing on Chiddingfold Green, is arguably the finest timber-framed building in Surrey. It is an open-hall house in the Wealden style. Very unusually, the Crown has six bays in total, with two-bay open hall and floored ends of two bays each. The open hall has an internal jetty and an overshot cross entry. Nine dendrochronological samples were taken from The Crown Inn. Of these, five form a 91 year chronology dated to span AD 1349 to AD 1439 and three form an 82 year chrnology dated to span AD 1357 to AD 1438. Four precise felling dates occur, two in the winter of AD 1438/9, one in the winter of AD1439/40 and one in the spring of AD 1440.Tree Ring Services Report CHCI/22/09
