HER 1192 - Medieval earthwork in Holt Wood, Chelsham
Scheduled Monument
In 1955 exploratory excavations in Holt Wood, Chelsham, proved the kite-shaped earthwork to be of early medieval date. Pottery of the 13th century onwards was found. At some time in the mid 17th century the site had fallen into disuse, with a revival of activity for a short period at the end of the century.
Evidence was found in the form of gravel flooring and post holes of lightly constructed farm buildings of 15th and 16th century date. Two late 13th century domestic hearths and flooring of a poor type of dwelling were also found.
