HER 1222 - Medieval moated site Little Pickle, North Park
Small earthwork in Little Pickle to the east of Place Farm, in North Park. Possibly a roughly-square moat, or bank and ditch earthwork. Foundations of a 16th century wall were found in the south bank and foundations of a building were discovered adjoining the “moat” on the south. At the south-east corner an overflow to the south was walled to form a fish pond. Excavation in 1983 and 1984 indicated a late medieval date. No evidence for structures in the interior were found and the most likely interpretation is that the site was a deer pound in the North Park. No evidence of the wall in the south bank was found, but considerable quantities of demolition debris from a 16th century (and earlier) building was found in that area and especially in the ditch. For this and building to the south see HER 2614. The site has been destroyed by sand extraction. (HER No 989) See HER No 2614
