HER 12376 - TIGBOURNE COURT
House. 1899-1901 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Sir Edgar Horne in a 17th century vernacular classical style; billiard room added to roar in 1910 by Horace Farquharson. Galleted Bargate stone blocks with brick quoins and thin horizontal bands of tiles running across the house, under plain tiled roofs. Central triple gabled range with single storey wings projecting from ends, ending in massive coupled chimneys flanked by curved, screen walls. Three storey central range with triple gables and front stack to right. Brick dressed two-light leaded casements in top floor, one to each gable, with three finely detailed "cross" windows below under brick open pediments, segmental outer pediments and triangular central pediment. Doric portico in antis to ground floor with paired columns and end pilasters. Central door behind. Paired diagonal brick stacks to ends of single storey flanking walls. Concave screen walls to ends with hipped ends over piers to tiled pentice coping. Arched door to centre. Single light square windows to either side and egg shaped panel over. Right hand return front:- double gables to left with leaded attic windows and large stone-mullioned,eight-light windows to first floor. One eight-light and one 12-light window to ground floor. Stone panel to first floor between the gables, over round arched door. Single storey range to right with square bay under hipped roof. Left hand return front:- Large gable to centre. Single storey Billiard Room to left. Rear:- Block to left with three windows to first floor and two arches to ground floor. Single storey corridor across centre with large gable behind. Hipped roof range to right with large brick stack. Interior:- Original plan had the central loggia entrance opening into the centre of a long narrow hall running from side to side. Central stairwell with single flight return stair, an adaptation of a design by Norman Shaw. Columned on upper flight and turned balusters. Barrel vaulted front room to left with Ionic pilaster screen. Doric columns flank the fireplace under a panelled overmantel. Stone flagged floor in hall with panelled ceiling containing a central foliage and fruit roundel. PEVSNER: Buildings of England, Surrey (1971) p.486-7. Listing NGR: SU9567537910
