HER 1344 - Roman corridor villa: Titsey

Scheduled Monument
Remains of a Roman Tripartite corridor villa 125ft by 60ft., found in 1847, excavated 1864-1893. Finds included patches of tessellated pavement, Samian, Castor and coarse pottery, glass, iron and bronze objects, and coins. Indications suggest the villa was destroyed by fire. Levelling the bays of two adjacent "fishponds" in 1865-6 revealed Roman remains in their construction, which suggests that they were contemporary to the villa. The possibility of a second building nearby was suggested, but the evidence seemed to be the boundary wall and the remains in the fishponds. Scheduled Monument See HER Nos 2584, 2585 and 2586.
