HER 13692 - Abinger Hall, Abinger
An earlier house, Paddington House, was replaced by Abinger Hall in 1783. The house was rebuilt again in 1872 in a slightly different position. The house was demolished in 1959. The mansion was in 1849 surrounded by about four acres of pleasure ground with a terraced walk and plantation. The one acre Kitchen garden had a vinery. By 1872 a terrace had been made across the south front with a balustrade. Two terraces with earth banks are below. Mixed woodland surrounds the house with parkland beyond the trees to the north and south. By 1914 the terrace to the south front had steps at each end and centrally down to a lawn with a curving wall on the south side and two more sets of steps down to the garden below with a fountain and balustraded terrace. A sundial was set on a third terrace. The woodland around the house extended further into the parkland. The garden appears to have been little altered until 1994 when an application was made for the construction of a house on the site.
