Ref: Archaeological evaluation on a proposed extension to the graveyard, St Giles’ Church, Ashtead. Surrey County Monument no 25. Ref: 17/01/06 Ref: On 10th January 2006 staff of the Surrey County Council Archaeological Unit (SCAU) carried out a field evaluation within the grounds of St Giles’ Church, Ashtead and the limits of the Surrey County Monument no 25. This work was undertaken on behalf of Ashtead Parochial Church Council who seek an extension to the extant graveyard and was permitted as a result of Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent granted by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMA ref no HSD/9/3/7535, dated 8 November 2005). An earlier document completed by SCAU (Poulton 2005) provides a detailed account of the specification for this work and also outlines the archaeological background of the site and its surroundings; the paper concluded that the archaeological potential of the area was good. Of particular interest to this work was the fact that the evaluation area lay immediately to the north of a substantial, partially infilled ditch that was used during the medieval period but which follows, at least in part, the course of a smaller ditch of Roman or earlier origin which itself lies immediately to the north of the site of a Roman building.
