HER 1487 - Iron Age promontory hillfort, Hillbury

Scheduled Monument
Hillbury is an Iron Age hillfort comprising a single bank and ditch on three sides, north and south ramparts follow the contours and the eastern rampart cuts across the neck of the plateau, the regular shape of which has dictated the shape of the camp. The monument has been broken through in a number of places by tracks and is mutilated in the north-east corner by quarrying but a probable original entrance is recognisable in the s side where there is the faint trace of a causeway. The site most probably served a defensive purpose. Excavation in 1887 by F James and F Lasham produced only finds, including a flint scraper, flakes, animal bone and ashes. Scheduled Monument.

DescriptionSurvey undertaken under the direction of C Currie of CKCA, as part of the Community Archaeology Project, for SCC and SyAS, to assess whether the study area should be designated as an ASHLV. Both documentary research and fieldwork added greatly to existing knowledge and confirmed the reports of later 19th century antiquarians who had identified extensive prehistoric and Roman activity in the area. See individual HER records for details of features.
