HER 149 - Roman Building and Ditch, Ashtead
Scheduled Monument
Roman Building and Ditch, excavated 1933-4 by A W G Lowther. Three periods were identified; the principle one being Roman but the Iron Age and Medieval periods were also attested to. The Roman site consisted of a v-shaped ditch, with internal bank, dated by 1st and 2nd century pottery in its fill. The angle of a building was also found, one wall traceable for 38ft. without returns, the other for 10ft. The walls were 2ft. thick and included flue tiles of the characteristic Ashtead Common type; interpreted as being built in the late 3rd century with materials from there. Roofing tiles and a few pieces of white and green wall plaster were also found. The building had evidently been robbed to build the church, which includes much Roman material (see HER no 142). After excavation the position of the Roman walls was permanently marked on the ground. Scheduled Monument.
