HER 1507 - All Saints Church (Pre-Conquest And Partly Norman)

All Saints Church, Witley. A pre-Conquest Nave with an early Normal doorway. The transepts and central tower (on site of the Saxon chancel) are late 12th century. The rest of the church is 13th-15th century. Excavation by the Haslemere Group of Surrey Archaeological Society of part of the south side of the nave revealed no trace of a previous church, but it was not possible to dig right along the south wall footing. A series of greensand floors, some lime-washed, were noted, and tentatively dated from the 12th to the 13th centuries.
