HER 15281 - Bronze Age finds and features: Church Lammas, Staines

Excavation by SCAU of the possible stock enclosure identified during evaluation in 1990 (see HER 5005). The enclosure was found to be rectangular, bounded by a ditch on three sides with a small entrance in both the north and east sides. Within this enclosure was found a ditched feature, 10 metres square (fig 2), roughly central to which was a large near-vertical sided, flat-bottomed pit. Finds from these features were relatively few, but consisted of struck flints and pot sherds, which indicated an early to middle Bronze Age date.

DescriptionThe site is of considerable archaeological interest as there seem to be no parallel sites in Surrey at least. Square or rectangular enclosures are not common in the Bronze Age. The large pit may have contained a burial. With the earlier discovery of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure nearby, it is possible that the area remained one of ritual significance through a long period of the later prehistoric era. It is recommended that more research be done before a final interpretation is advanced. [AIP]
