HER 1534 - Roman building (site of): Chiddingfold

Scheduled Monument
The site of a Roman villa was discovered in 1883 in a field near Chiddingfold. Extensive foundations of rough sandstone were seen, the position of the walls being clearly shown, though much had been taken away. The general plan seems to be very similar to that of a villa at Beddington, (i.e. a bath house). Some large roof-tiles, Samian and other pottery, glass, a coin of Constantine and a small plated bronze head (possibly late Roman), were discovered. Over a number of years a large number of tesserae of red brick, and fragments of brick and tile, all probably Roman, have been collected from the field. Some fragments of Roman glass and a 2nd century Romano-British pot "from Chiddingfold", and probably from this site, are on display in Guildford Museum.

DescriptionIn August 2005 a team from Surrey Archaeological Society excavated six small trenches over an isolated concentration of tesserae visible in the plough-soil about 30m east of the presumed site of the main range of Roman buildings. All the trenches recovered further tesserae from the plough-soil, but only two produced definite evidence for underlying archaeology. One trench revealed a stone-packed postpit approximately 0.80m diameter with the posthole partially backfilled with tesserae while the second – that closest to the previously excavated Roman buildings – exposed a probable layer of building rubble.
