HER 15777 - Burstow Manor, Rookery Hill, Burstow

Burstow Manor is a remarkably complete survival of an early medieval moated manor house. There was a 2-bay open hall, a floored service bay and a 2-bay parlour cross-wing. Everything is of the highest quality and of truly massive timbers. The open truss has a huge tiebeam (8.5m long, 56cm deep) and long, wide arched braces. The spandrels have a complex network of struts, and mouldings abound. Above is a grand crown-post with curious, splayed foot-braces. The parlour wing also has a crown-post roof. Huge, square section knee braces support the central, ground floor, cross beam. Later a central chimney was inserted and the front ‘Georgianised’ with brick and tiling. Tree-ring analysis (dendrochronology) of timbers from the building has dated it to the 14th century.
