HER 15921 - Nailstore and smithy: Dapdune Wharf
Known alternately as the nailstore or smithy. A brick building with weatherboard gable and possible later weatherboarded attachment on the north side. First shown on 1896 OS 25” map; presume made c. 1871-96. The brickwork on the west side is interesting as it appears to be older than the brickwork elsewhere. This could mean that old bricks were reused on this side. Alternatively it could mean that the faces approached by visitors on the south and east sides have been drastically repaired by the National Trust. There is an old ‘steam chest’ at the rear, used to bend timbers for use in the barges built here from c. 1910.
