HER 1604 - Four Bronze Age bowl barrows, Frensham

Scheduled Monument
Four bowl barrows, on a ridge on Frensham Common. The group is in poor condition, but fragments of ditch remaining around some of the barrows suggests that the part of the group was originally surrounded by an enclosure ditch. Scheduled Monument. See HER 2190 for other possible barrows.

DescriptionExcavation of a trench by volunteers from SyAS of a large mound under the embankment of the A287, to identify if it was one of the ten Bronze Age barrows reported by Rev Charles Kerry on Frensham Common during April 1870. The feature proved to be entirely natural, consisting of undisturbed sand and iron pan. This means either that Kerry’s mounds have yet to be located, or that he mistook the largest mounds on the eastern shore of the Great Pond as barrows due to their comparable size to other barrows on the common. Therefore, five of Kerry’s ten barrows still exist; one has been flatterned during the construction of a car park; two are natural features; one still remains to be tested and one remains ‘missing’
