Ref: Archaeological watching brief during excavations of a telecom cable trench at Abbey Green/Abbey Barns, Chertsey Ref: 31/08/06 Ref: An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by staff of the Surrey County Council Archaeological Unit (SCAU) during the excavation of a British Telecom cable trench in Chertsey, align Abbey Gardens and in front of Abbey Barn in August 2006. The watching brief followed the form and standards set out in the Written Schemed of Investigation (Poulton 2006) which was prepared in response to the Scheduled Ancient Monument consent (ref HSD 9/2/8342). The consent was required owing to the site falling within the National Monument Number 23002, the Benedictine monastery of Chertsey Abbey. BT Openreach authorised the Surrey County Archaeological Unit to undertake the work required to comply with the planning condition and the Scheduled Ancient Monument consent.
