HER 1623 - St Catherine's Church 14th century and earlier remains, Artington
Scheduled Monument
St Catherines Church. The chapel (now roofless) was built on the site of an earlier chapel after 1301 (the chaplain is mentioned in a Pipe Roll of 1230). The present building was erected by Richard de Wauncey, Rector of St Nicholas, and consecrated May 1317. The building was a plain parallelogram with walls that are mainly sandstone, with chalk dressings, characteristically 14th century. The side windows over the north and south doorways were at some period converted to doorways with outside steps, and probably connected with a gallery within. In part it was two storeyed, for the exhibition of relics to pilgrims. The chapel may have become disused by 1546, as it does not appear in the list of chapels or chantries suppressed by Edward VI.
The chapel is now ruinous but the fabric has to a certain extent been restored. The site is railed off. Scheduled Monument.
