HER 16603 - The Museum Garden, Willmer House, Farnham
Wilmer House is of Georgian date although there is little reference to the garden in this period. In 1773, an unknown artist painted the panorama of Farnham including this garden showing tall brick walls enclosing a garden featuring fruit trees and formal lawns. A kitchen garden was the main feature in 1773. The garden has changed a significant amount through the centuries although fruit only stopped being grown in the garden from the World War One. The house was used as by the Canadian Army in the Second World War where Nissan Huts were reputedly built in the garden. The kitchen garden disppeared during under the new Gallery Garden in the 1960's. Now with its walls, lawn, gravel path and old varieties of roses and shrubs the layout of the garden evokes the spirit of the predecessor.
