HER 1682 - Farnham Castle: 12Th Century

Scheduled Monument
Farnham Castle consists of a keep, bailey, curtain wall and outer ditch of a castle dating from the 12th century. Excavations within the keep in 1958-9 revealed much of the castle's development. It was constructed in 1138 on the orders of Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester. A stone tower, perhaps as much as 35m high and with a central well shaft, was built first. Its base was then buried with chalk to form a 10m high mound around the tower. To the south of this original keep was a triangular arrangement of buildings including kitchens, a chapel and a hall, all enclosed within a ditch. These buildings, are Grade I Listed Buildings. After 1155, when Henry II had the original keep pulled down, the castle was rebuilt in the form of a shell keep some 50m in diameter with rooms in the four towers. The bailey was enlarged to its present limits, the huge 40m wide ditch was dug and the curtain wall with its square mural towers and gatehouse was erected. During the 13th-15th centuries, domestic buildings continued to be built within the new keep and some 15th century brickwork can be seen over the entrance. The keep was abandoned after the Civil War and was finally used as a garden in the Victorian period. Scheduled Monument

DescriptionOn 29 March 2006 (letter ref HSD 9/2/8019) the Secretary of State gave consent to Farnham Castle Briefings Ltd to hand dig three small evaluation trenches immediately inside a section of the southern curtain wall that was showing signs of instability. The wall here retains the terrace to the south of the main castle buildings. The trenches were needed to allow a structural engineer to examine the stratigraphy inside the retaining wall and recommend appropriate remedial works. An archaeological condition was attached to the SM consent and this report covers the result of that element of the works.

DescriptionIn 2005 Listed Building Consent was granted for works in Gardiner’s Wing, Farnham Castle. The Wing was divided into several small rooms and the proposal was to remove a number of internal partition walls dating from the 1930s and later to create an open plan office space. The consent required an archaeological/historic buildings survey to be carried out during the course of the building works and this report is the result of that requirement. The works were visited on two dates in May 2006 when most of the partition walling and associated plasterwork and ceiling boards had been removed and the 1930s kitchen range demolished.Report co-authored by Michael Clements

DescriptionWayneflete’s Tower is a substantial 15th century brick structure positioned at the west end of the hall on the south side of the bailey at Farnham Castle. On 4 October 2006 (letter ref HSD 9/2/8573) the Secretary of State gave consent to Farnham Castle Briefings Ltd to dig a trench to take heating pipes from a point south of the cellar door on the west side of the tower and then northwards before being run vertically up the outside of the kitchen/dining room wall and passing into the building through a pair of holes to be drilled through the wall. An archaeological condition was attached to the Scheduled Monument Consent and this report covers the result of that element of the project.
