HER 181 - Remains of Betchworth Castle, Defended House, Milton
Scheduled Monument
Betchworth Castle occupies the end of a spur which drops steeply into the River Mole. It comprises a probably 18th century house in Gothic style, of brick and re-used stone, overlying and using as part of its foundations an undercroft of 14th or 15th century date. The remains are quite extensive and stand in parts to a height of 20-30 ft. but the majority of it is 18th century work or later and nowhere can the remains of the earlier house (or houses) be recognised in situ above the plinth course. The ruin is overgrown with trees and in parts is liable to collapse.
