HER 1851 - Three or four Bronze Age bowl barrows
Scheduled Monument
Four bowl barrows in a row, the two central ones overlapping. They vary from 80 to 100 ft in diameter and from 5-6ft in height. Situated on elevated semi-wooded heathland. They vary in diameter from 25m to 30m and average 2.2m in height. 'A' and 'B' are contained within a single ditch and 'C' is also ditched. The ditches are fragmentary on the north side. The central mound 'B' now has the appearance of a single barrow. The barrows which have a few trees and bushes growing on them, have been much mutilated by the digging of army slit trenches and by a vehicular track which runs the length of the group. Detailed survey (1976) of the barrow group and examination of trench cutting surrounding ditch for Surrey Archaeological Service and Department of Environment. The Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint artefacts, a flake or blade and a scrape are in Surrey Heath Museum, acc nos p736 and p737. Shown as Three Barrows or variants on maps since Rocque's 1768, although there are four barrows in the gap.
