HER 1863 - Bowl Barrow with 25 Late Bronze Age secondary cremations; two other barrows.

Bowl barrow, 22.0m in diameter and 1.2m in height with no trace of a ditch. Excavated in December 1901 but not shown on the O S map in 1901. First discovered when laying out the Golf Course, in removing earth from the top of the barrow to make a tee, when three urns were uncovered. It had formerly been reduced by two feet by the previous occupier of the land. Trenches were cut north-south and east-west but no primary burial was found. Twenty-five cremations, all but two in urns, were found as secondary burials mostly in the south-west quadrant. Two small barrows were noted nearby on lower ground on the fairway. In 1966 it was noted that the barrow was covered by Rhododendrons and a very old sundial. No other mounds were noted nearby. Round barrow excavated by Shrubsole and Colyer in 1901 more likely to have been situated at SU 952664. The barrow at Heatherside (SU95206622) may be one of the two small tumuli observed by Shrubsole lying to the south of the one excavated in 1901. The typical Late Bronze Age bucket and barrel urns are still in Reading and Guildford Museums, and Guildford Museum">Guildford Museum possesses a photograph from the 1901 excavation.
