HER 2031 - Medieval holloway, Ashtead
Earthwork, possibly a 12th century bank and ditch, or a medieval hollow way. Excavation during 1933-4 by Lowther. The principal phase of occupation of the Roman (HER 149) but a medieval period was also identified. This was represented by an existing broad shallow ditch on the north-west side of Ashtead Church. This was dated to the circa 15th century by an iron arrowhead, two hobnails, an iron horseshoe and a few pieces of glazed pottery. Rough metalling in the ditch suggested that it was a sunken trackway (hollow way). Further excavation of several trenches across the feature described by Lowther as a hollow way occurred in 1966. A possible clay bank with small timber revetment were recovered inside (east) of the shallow ditch. This, together with the discontinuity of the flint layer previously thought to be metalling ,counts against explanation of feature as medieval hollow way. Pottery dated to the late 12th century.
