HER 2072 - St Martin's Church, Dorking
Present building is 19th century (1868-73), but records tell of a church in Dorking from at least the 11th century. The floor of the new church is raised 6ft above that of previous one, leaving a crypt. Before building operations were undertaken to develop the crypt, archaeological investigation was undertaken in 1974 by the Surrey Archaeological Society. A trial trench revealed a 16cm thick layer of packed chalk 12cm below the present sand surface in crypt. See also HER 2082, 77 and 82.
