HER 2081 - Medieval Settlement Site, Weybridge
Excavated site. Five structures, and probably a sixth, were excavated together with three gullies, the two ends of a surrounding ditch and some pits. The pottery dates mostly to circa 1150 to circa 1325. The site may be interpreted as a small medieval estate, enclosed by a ditch and palisade. The capital messuage was an example of a distinctive class of lightly framed timber building, comparable to Ellington (Huntingdonshire) and Newstead (Yorks). Documentary evidence links the site with the Broc (Brok, Brooke) family. For a location map, general background and details of the Iron Age period see HER 2383 and 724; for Saxon period see HER 2080.
