HER 2085 - Roman Pottery, Holmbury Hill, Abinger
1st Century AD Roman ampulla found, according to the Victoria County History, "in the entrenchments on Holmbury Hill". An early Roman pottery rim discovered during excavations in 1930 by Winbolt on Holmbury Hill. No Roman material was found during the excavation on the hillfort by Thompson in 1974 (see HER 2) but it is interesting to note that a phase of occupation during the pre-Flavian period was attested at Anstiebury hillfort 5km to the east of Holmbury (see HER 2083).
